One of the biggest myths about the menopause is it starts after 50.
Err MYTH!
The menopause can begin at any time during your 40’s-60’s. Or even earlier (although this is rarer).
There’s also confusion about what the menopause means. The definition of the menopause is when a woman hasn’t menstruated for 12 consecutive months.
So, if you don’t have a period for a few months, it’s not strictly the menopause – it’s the perimenopause.
Often when we talk about the menopause, we mean the perimenopause. It’s during the perimenopause, oestrogen levels start to reduce, periods become irregular and women start to experience a range of symptoms.
These include hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, anxiety, migraines, vaginal dryness, loss of sex drive, vertigo and weight gain.
But every woman is different. Some may experience one or two symptoms, others more.
Likewise, the average duration of the perimenopause is 3-4 years. For some women, it takes a few months, while for others, it can last a decade or longer.
